Russell, Bay of Islands, New Zealand

Now here's a nice spot. It's got a Rotto feel to it. Not many cars, shady Moreton Bay figs and wooden verandahs along the beachfront, lots of boats and yachts, and a ferry back to Paihia on the mainland. The back beach, Long Beach, happened to have a small but reasonable surf, brought in by the cyclone that delivered a deluge of rain. That's what keeps the jungles green right down to the high tide mark. But the rain and the tides make the water too murky for good snorkelling. And then to finish up, an ice cold naturally brewed Mac's Pilsener on the verandah of the Duke of Marlborough pub, overlooking the bay of boats, with a live trio doing great covers of laid back rock in beautiful dulcet tones.
