When I stay in Madrid, I like to stay in Toledo. It`s half an hour by fast train south, and is much smaller and quieter. It`s a well preserved medieval citadel surrounded on three sides by a deep gorge and with solid city walls and bridhes still intact. The towns streets are narrow, twisting alleywalls, a leftover from the Moors and Christian conflicts as a deliberate ploy to confuse the enemy. The cathedral, churches, monastries and alcazar all take you back in time.
